Formula 1 Pilot’s Safety – What is HANS?

Have you ever noticed that F1 drivers’ helmets have a sort of an appendix attached to it?

That is HANS – Head and Neck Support System – and consists of a carbon fibre shoulder collar which is secured under the driver’s safety belts and connected to his helmet by two elastic straps.

HANS is intended to prevent vertebrae stretching and the driver’s head from hitting the steering wheel.

HANS was introduced by the FIA in 2003 with the aim of increasing pilots safety, namely when major accidents occur such has the one that victimized Ayrton Senna in 1994.
