Frederico Silva Wins 2012 Junior US Open Doubles Final – First Grand Slam with Portuguese flavor

For the first time a Portuguese tennis player won a tennis Grand Slam event. More specifically Frederico Silva (a.k.a. Kiko Silva, Portuguese) and Kyle Edmund (United Kingdom) won the US Open Junior Doubles Final played against the Australian double composed by Jordan Thompson and Nick Kyrgios.

The game was won in three sets with the partials of 5-7, 6-4 and 10-6 in a Super Tie-breaker. Frederico Silva (9th seed) had reached 1/8 finals match earlier in the week in the singles variant losing to Nick Kyrgios (7th seed).

Frederico Silva (age 17, from Caldas da Rainha, Portugal) junior career already puts him as the best Portuguese all times young player. He currently scores 10th in the junior ITF World Ranking and is coached by Pedro Felner. Frederico Silva has been frequently asked  to be sparing-partner of Rafael Nadal or Roger Federer and has received high praises from some of the world top players.

The transition from junior to senior usually is not a easy one but the level of professionalism already recognized in Frederico’s career (he has a good coach and good training conditions in Caldas da Rainha) topped with this last outstanding result must give hope to the Portuguese tennis fans that the best Portuguese tennis player of all times could be emerging.

Portugal never had a top-50 senior tennis player.
