João Sousa: a new star from Portugal in professional tennis

João Sousa is currently the best Portuguese tennis player at position 77 in the ATP ranking and today he became the first Portuguese tennis player to ever win an ATP tournament after he have beaten Julien Benneteau in the ATP 250 in Kuala Lumpur.  In route to the championship he defeated (among others) David Ferrer and Jurgen Melzer.

Sousa could enter the ATP top 50 in the next recalculation of the ATP ranking and can hope for a 2014 season playing professional tennis main events without having to play the qualifiers.

In the current season he has been defeated by Andy Murray (Australian Open) and by Novak Djokovic (US Open).

João Sousa was born in march 1989 in the city of Guimarães in the north of Portugal and has been the fourth Portuguese tennis player to enter ATP top 100. Sousa has won five challengers  titles and seven futures titles in his career. He began playing professional tennis at age 16 and he trains at Trains at the BTT Academy in Barcelona.
