The 2013 Biathlon World Championships came to an end yesterday in Nove Mesto with the Mass Start Events.
Norway was the big winner of the 11 competition days. Indeed, out of 33 medals to be conquered Norway took 11 (one third overall). 8 of them were Gold medals meaning that only in 3 events a biathlete from another country managed to claim 1st place. Those were: Olena Pidhrushna (Ukraine) in the women’s sprint, Martin Fourcade (France) in the men’s Individual and Darya Domracheva (Belarus) in the women’s mass start.
France and Ukraine took 5 medals each, meaning that two thirds of all medals stood within 3 countries domains.
In men, Norwegian Emil Hegle Svendsen dominated podium places with 4 Gold Medals (Mixed relay, Sprint, Pursuit and Men Relay) and a Bronze in Mass Start. Nonetheless, Martin Fourcade still leads the World Cup overall classification with a 93 points advantage over Svendsen. 2013 Global Crystal will be decided between these two till the end of the season.
In women another Norwegian was even more dominant: Tora Berger; she took 4 Gold medals (Mixed relay, Pursuit, Individual and Women Relay) and 2 silvers (Sprint and Mass Start). This means she finished all the races she entered in either in 1st or 2nd. With this performance she now has an overall World Cup lead of 283 points over Darya Domracheva and the Overall World Cup Global Crystal (as probably the Global Crystal of each event) will certainly be her’s in the end of the season.
Biathlon World Cup will now take a week break before returning next February 28th in Oslo Holmenkollen, Norway. Norway is the berth of biathlon since the first competition was held in this country.
The local crowd will have a great opportunity to pay homage to their Champions!
