US Open 2013 Prize Money – $50 Million by 2017!

untitledThe 2013 Tennis US Open is on its way with the qualifiers phase already being played.

Prize money for the 2013 edition (the 40th anniversary!) recently suffered the major increase ever in a Grand Slam (almost $9 million (m)) totalling a tournament record of $ 34,3m. In this year, the US Open prize money will be the highest of the four grand slam tournaments: Australian Open ($30m), French Open, Roland Garros ($29m), and Wimbledon ($34m).

In singles events, prize money for both men and women are the following:

– Winner: $ 2,6m

– Finalist: $ 1,3m

– Semi-finalist: $ 650,000

– Quarter-finalist: $ 325,000

– Round of 16: $ 165,000

– Round of 32: $ 93,000

– Round of 64: $ 53,000

– Round of 128: $ 32,000

The US Open was the 1st Grand Slam tournament to grant equal prizes no matter the players’ gender. In 1973 John Newcombe and Margaret Court both received $25,000.

But there is more. The US Open has made a 5 year agreement with its sponsor (Emirates Airline) to increase the total prize money to about $50m by 2017.

Andy Murray and Serena Williams (defending champions) and Novak Djokovic and Victoria Azarenka (2012 finalists) are the ones with most points to defend. In men this may prove decisive for the next Barclays 2013 ATP Tour Finals 8 players’ shortlist.
